Environmental Barriers – What that Means for ONLINE Learning Environments
Many people do not think about online learning as having environmental barriers, and yet many of the barriers encountered in online learning can be classified as “environmental.”
In online or electronic environments, the environment amounts primarily to the interface – how is the website designed, what is the interface of the CD-ROM training, what features would aid in access and what features are distracting.
A lot of similar principles apply as covered before - consistency, hierarchy, repetition, alignment, contrast, etc. However, there are some accessibility considerations that are different for online. For detailed tips on accessibility, see the Tutorial for Creating Accessible Websites.
