The designer removed the distracting background color. This is an accessibility modification; however, it clearly benefits learners besides those with visual impairments. The graphics have all been converted to gray scale so they look unified. The alignment along the circle has been organized better. Also, the font was changed to a more readable font for all students. Finally, a line was added at each of the parts so learners know what to label and see a place for that.
This same material could be presented in a variety of ways for different learners, including those with disabilities:
- It could be turned into a tactile graphic and students with visual impairments tell the teacher what they feel
- It could be turned into an electronic activity where students interact to drag the picture to the right place
- If it's put on a website, each of the important graphic elements should have a descriptive tag (like an alt tag or a d-link) that provides a description and the student has a blank to fill in the label
These are just a few possibilities - but possibilities that improve learning for all. What materials can YOU change in your class that would make it more accessible and improve learning?
