It is VERY important to note that the definitions of the four characteristics all include the word “can.” This is where design – conscious decisions focused on the desired results – becomes crucial. Digital media is not inherently versatile, transformable, marked up, or networked – it has the possibility of being so. Those possibilities are what have been missing before.

Versatility in Materials
Instead of providing your learners material in a printed format, which is static and will stay in that form until it degenerates, you can achieve versatility, transformability, etc. if you first provide the materials in a digital format. In addition to words, you can incorporate pictures, animations, or a video example. Now we have versatility.
