Instructional Barriers – Transformability in Materials

Next, we'll make it transformable. This website, for example, is transformable. While the pages may appear to you to be one larger arrangement of all these pieces, the content is actually totally driven by a CSS – cascading style sheet. If someone wanted to modify the appearance of this website, they could replace the CSS with their own CSS or over-ride certain color designations so they see colors (and color contrasts) that make it easier for them to read the content. By separating content (the actual words and images you're seeing) from layout using CSS, we've made it modifiable.

Most websites do not yet feature this sort of transformability – they've not crossed from “can” to “do.” If you want to ensure wider access for audiences, you have to consciously build your digital media with features that allow for that sort of flexibility.
